North Carolina is known for pristine beaches, a beautiful coast line, mountains, agriculture, and...HURRICANES. According to Chief Operating Officer, Johanna Biliouris, with the NC Rate Bureau, NC is ranked 7th for flood risk among all 50 states. It is surprising to know that only about 10% of North Carolinians have a flood policy in place, and most of those are probably in flood plains.
With the creation of impervious surfaces due to the extensive commercial and residential development in NC, many areas of NC are at risk for flooding, not just homes in a flood zone. Most planning departments now have zoning requirements to ensure spillways and retention ponds are built to catch runoff in commercial areas and neighborhoods. Any home in a large subdivision or close to commercial developments could be subject to flooding, even if they are not in a flood pain.
